Series Overview: In a culture obsessed with selfies, celebrities, money, and success, it’s not difficult to understand why so many of us struggle with being a little self-centered at times. But while “me first” may the norm for the rest of the world, Jesus showed us what it looks like to live a generous, compassionate, selfless, “after you” kind of life.
Week 1: Living selflessly starts with noticing others' needs.
Week 2: Living selflessly requires opening your hands.
Week 3: Living selflessly requires sharing your joy.
Week 1: When life is difficult, we might wonder, "Why would God let this happen? Should I just give up? Is it all worth it?" This may come as a surprise, but even Jesus understands what it's like to ask questions like these.
Read Matthew 26:36-39.
In the final hours before Jesus' death, we see Him asking, "God, is there any other way?" If I were Jesus, I'd be asking another question too: "God, is this worth it? These people who've betrayed me, forgotten about me, humiliated me, hurt me, and want to kill me — are they really worth this pain?"
When Jesus stared death, torture, and humiliation in the face, He decided that yes, you were worth it.
Life isn't easy. Following Jesus isn't easy. There might be days when you want to give up, but on those days, I hope you remember that God is with you and understands you, because the Jesus who suffered suffers with you.
Read Hebrews 4:14-16.
Week 2: Read 1 Corinthians 15.
If the resurrection never happened, then our faith is meaningless! Those are strong words. Here's why that's so important: if Jesus never rose from the dead, there is no power that can free us from sin.
In our own power, we can't make this right. But through God's power and the resurrection of Jesus, our sins can be forgiven and we can be redeemed. Through Jesus, we can be resurrected right now. Despite the sins we've committed, the resurrection gives us power through Jesus to live differently.
Because of the resurrection, if you trust and follow Him, the Jesus who lives now lives in you.
He is risen!
